Welcome to Swatantra Khadi Ashram, a place where tradition, craftsmanship, and sustainability come together to offer you the finest Madhubani Khadi cloth. Established in 1960, we have proudly carried forward the legacy of handwoven Khadi, celebrating the rich heritage of India’s rural artisans. Over the decades, Swatantra Khadi Ashram has become synonymous with authenticity, quality, and a deep-rooted connection to the art of Khadi making.
Our Story
Swatantra Khadi Ashram was born out of a vision to promote Khadi, the fabric that played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement, and support the local weavers and artisans who dedicate their lives to preserving this craft. Our founder, the late Jai Mangal Singh, inspired by the ideals of self-reliance and sustainability, established this shop in 1960 in the heart of Bihar’s Madhubani District at Pandaul Block, which is famous for its unique style of Mithila painting and handicrafts.
We began with a simple goal to make pure, handwoven Khadi available to everyone, while providing a sustainable source of income to local artisans. Over the years, we have worked closely with skilled weavers and craftspeople who continue to hand-spin and hand-weave the Khadi fabric using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations.
